Is there a way to quantify how good a school is by combining the two ratings? or simply looking at the API school ratingssufficient?

API Reports:
Based on the API scores, schools are assigned API growth targets. These performance metrics are also available for various student subgroups. Schools also receive rankings one comparing similar schools and another comparing all schools in the state.

How do you reconcile the API rating against the STAR rating for a given school?
The STAR program includes the California Standards Tests,Privacy Policy. the California Modified Assessment the California Alternate Performance Assessment, and Standards-based Tests in Spanish ... California also administers the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE), which high school students must pass to graduate.
For example, Fox Elementary in Belmont has a high API (900+), but the STAR report doesnt look as impressive- expected a higher % to be advanced, rather than just proficient.
Especially the API trend is useful, as it shows the momentum of a school. You can check a particular schools api trend on
Look at not just the overall API but also the similar scores ranking. That will tell you if a school is doing better or worse than others with similar student demographics. Fox has a similar schools ranking of 6, which means it does about average (60th percentile) compared to schools with similar demographics. Cipriani, which has an API only a bit lower than Fox (895) has a similar schools ranking of 2, placing it in the bottom 20% compared to schools with similar demographics. And Green Hills in Millbrae has a virtually identical API to Fox (909) but a similar schools ranking of 10, placing it in the top 10% compared to its peers.

If you input an schools zip code or a propertys address, you will find a school, then you can select school detail by click on that school. Here is Irvingtons school page:
